Attention: all cashiers
Please don’t wait until my receipt is printed before returning my credit/debit card. I hate having to put the receipt down to put my card back into my wallet then picking up the receipt again to deal with it. Swipe, return, receipt - a simple three step procedure that will make life much more pleasant for all parties . Thank you for your time.

I’m 100% on board the self-checkout train.
Now just make the machines respond faster....

I am as well, but sometimes that doesn’t work all that well. Once, at Walmart, I kept having to get the attendant over to allow me to purchase chemicals in spray cans and other things that they don’t want to sell to minors . Frustrated, I walked out of the store leaving everything at the register. And I’ve only been in one fast food joint that had a self check (with a 10% discount if you used it), but they removed those stations. Costco also pulled their self-checkout stations, which really sucked when I was using someone else’s card...

Various fast food joints, with the reader built into the register, come to mind.

I fully agree with Bill Burr on this.
I almost left a full grocery cart at one of those machines once because it was all they had open. The only reason I checked out on my own was because I knew some worker was going to have to put the stuff back.

Card swipe? Almost all the places in the U.K. have been chip and pin since 2008, started in 2004.
The only time a card is swiped is if topping up a mobile airtime voucher, discount card, etc...
Even the chip and pin has been replaced to touchless payment (£30 and under, transactions) for some of my shopping.
Many places will ask if you want a receipt here too, rather than just giving you one.

When I was in high school and kind of a scummy person, I used to love going to the self checkout and scanning a Hot Wheels car for a buck, then putting my CD or whatever in the bag with it. They used to have very basic weight sensors that wouldn’t pick up anything under a pound or so.
Buuuut, I got caught one day and went to Walmart jail for half an hour while they debated on calling the cops. Technically speaking, I could have pressed charges against THEM since my story was just that I forgot to scan the item, and since I hadn’t left the store, they couldn’t bust me for shoplifting. Unlawful detainment, or whatever it’s called.
Anyway, long story short: self checkouts promote theft and take away jobs. Screw them.

And not lock up and require an override every t ime you reach into your cart for the next item.

It’s become pretty much the same in most of the US. I think OP’s experience is outside of the norm.

Speed depends a lot on the store. I think Walmart as one of the early adopters before the technology was really ready gave them a bad name. Those new ones with the 24” 4K screens and wireless scan guns at Home Depot are amazing and have changed my opinion in the whole thing. My local grocery store also does a great job by having one attendant per 4 or so machines to help with things like IDs for alcohol.
On a side note one of the technicians I work with had a previous job doing field repairs of self checkout machines. He said one of the big problems with speed is that the machines are really expensive and break down so much that store owners don’t have the budget for things like OS upgrades after just getting the scanners and scales repaired.

me too, i hate social interactions with strangers and “small talk” companies force cashiers to make with the customers. self checkouts avoid both of those

Most places in the US switched to chip and pin a few years ago as well.

I like Walmart Pay for Walmart, no paper receipts and the digital receipt automatically submitted to Savings Catcher for price matching. Another perk is, since you don't get a paper receipt, you can bypass the receipt checker less awkwardly.

Receipt checker? I haven’t encountered one of those yet. But I wouldn’t stop for them if I did. Once they have my money and I have my merchandise the transaction is over and they can kiss my ass if they want to stop me.
One more reason not to shop there, I guess...

Most of the ones I use seem pretty good. It's when I tap an icon on the touchscreen and it takes a second to register, or I type in the number of bags I'm buying and it takes two seconds to go to the next screen... Little things

But vastly increase efficiency. I think it's worth it. Eeeeevery once in awhile I go back to a cashier, and immediately regret it. Quite literally 10x the wait, plus just awkward conversation. If a cashier is forced to say "have a merry turkey-giving!" I'd much rather not talk. Also I’m no angel. In high-school I’d buy sweet potatoes, chicken, and peanut butter granola but input white rice and ring it up by the pound. Being poor, chasing gains, and having questionable morals was a bad combo.

I remember jackinthebox used to have those. They were great. You could completely customize your orders. I'd get two patties, mozzarella, sourdough bread, with curly fry seasoning.

TBH, I don’t even know where my checkbook is at the moment. It’s been that long since I’ve used one now that most companies have figured out that there’s no reason to charge extra for using a debit card or electronic transfer since it saves them time, money and minimizes risk.

Just make sure you look closely at the statement each month. And don’t let them go paperless on you because it’s too hard to be diligent when the statements are all online.
